The bent End Pin

Although the bent end pin which Paul Tortelier invented for playing the cello has been around for many years and is used by many cellists, there are very few double bass players who use this technical aid. François Rabbath advocates the use of the bent end pin because
  • the instrument can be easily balanced when it is played in a standing position
  • it weighs less heavily on the chest
  • the angle of each string to the instrument remains constant - a necessary condition for a sure bowing technique
  • weight can be used instead of muscle strength. This applies to the bow arm as well as the hand stopping the string.
François Rabbath has encouraged instrument makers to develop new bent end pin designs. Nowadays these designs are available in steel (for the standard setup) as well as in wood and carbon-fibre (to insert directly into the lower rib).
