Life in Rostock

The Hanseatic city of Rostock is characterised by its location on the Baltic coast and at the mouth of the river Warnow, its maritime traditions stretching back far into the past, a University that is more than five hundred years old, and the cosmopolitan Hanseatic tradition.

Special features of the city include the influence of the water on the cultural landscape, omnipresent traces of the mediaeval trading metropolis, the imposing harbour and shipyard locations, the villas area, lively Wilhelminian quarters, and above all the charming seaside resort of Warnemünde.

Rostock has become transformed from a former industrial city into a city with a maritime character and a varied economic structure, and into a centre of culture and science. As well as this, it is a harbour city, a green city and a seaside resort, and has now become a powerful magnet for tourists.

Rostock, as the principal centre of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern offers a high quality of life which includes, in addition to the excellent residential and shopping opportunities, a variegated range of cultural and leisure options.
